Read the river before you rig

In lower flows, trout often settle into seams beside faster water, soft edges below shelves, and deeper slots where they can eat without fighting the current all day. Your fly needs to reach those lanes, but it does not need every split shot in the box.

When water rises, fish may slide toward the banks, tuck behind larger structure, or use quieter secondary currents. A versatile 5-weight lets you shorten the leader, add an indicator, or switch to a light streamer without turning the whole day into a gear change.

What to carry for a winter day

Keep the system simple enough to change quickly. A practical starting point is:

• 9-foot 5-weight with a balanced floating line
• 9- to 12-foot leader, adjusted for depth and clarity
• Small indicators, split shot, and fluorocarbon tippet
• Midge, caddis, and mayfly patterns in several weights
• One or two small streamers for stained water or active fish

A Texas 5-weight earns its place
